Roger Munns asked:

The pioneering airline that first brought low cost airlines to Malta has done well enough to start new routes to the island.

Ryanair, the Irish based low cost airline, were the first airline to win the right to fly to Malta from the island’s main markets for tourism of Ireland and the UK.

The first route launched has been running between London’s Luton Airport since November, while the Dublin route had its inaugural flight in March. Both routes have attracted good seat occupancy levels, with tourist numbers in Malta rising.

The new route will run between Bremen in Germany to Malta and will be a welcome addition for Malta’s attempt to attract more German tourists to the island.

Operating three times a week, it is hoped that the first flights will begin in September.

Before the new flights began last November, estimates suggested that the low cost airline could add an extra 80,000 tourists to the island in 2007, but this figure has been radically upgraded to double that.

Malta’s slow pace of life might have contributed to the late introduction of low cost flights compared to her competitors, or it could have been politicians and the tourist authorities more interested in protecting the island’s national airline with attitudes that the rest of Europe began to shrug off in the 80’s, but whatever the reason, now that Malta has allowed the low cost airlines, they can’t get enough of them.

The number of visitors to Malta is up nearly ten per cent this year, thanks mainly to the extra arrivals being delivered by the low cost airlines. And the extra holiday makers couldn’t have come at a better time as the island has seen steadily decreasing tourists numbers in recent years - the ultimate factor in the decision to allow the flights in.

With tourism numbers up, tourism chiefs have seen the magic bullet that has driven the statistics, and embraced the concept of low air fares whole heartedly.

While Malta has previously received most of their visitors from the UK, the idea of diversification has become possible as low cost airlines operate from most European countries, and the island is already receiving flights from Germany and Spain.

The country has let it be known that they will welcome applications for flights from Scandanavia and other areas of Europe.

The u-turn is now complete, from a backward looking slow to respond tourist office, to one that sees a quick fix to Malta’s previous declining popularity as a holiday destination.

Helping Malta’s image in the UK, Germany and other countries have been reports placing Malta at the top of tourist safety tables.

An American journalist last year placed the small Mediterranean island of Malta as one of the five safest travel destinations in the world, and a new report from the US this year confirms Malta as one of the safest vacation spots in the world.

This year’s report bears more official weight than the previous one by a travel writer, as it was compiled by the US State Department.

Commenting on Malta, the report praises the island for the non existence of organised crime, especially surprising perhaps given her proximity to mainland Italy - and closer still to Sicily.

A surprise for many who have driven in Malta is that the report considers the island’s roads to be safe. But this is backed up by official EU figures showing Malta has the lowest road related fatalities of all the EU States.

Ann Locicero asked:

The no-frills airline, launched by Southwest in the 1980s, is no longer a U.S. phenomena. Low cost carriers are popping up around the world. They are taking over domestic and international routes throughout Europe and Asia and select routes in South America, Africa and the Middle East. A few even operate intercontinental flights. And many are profitable.

Yet there is a flip side to cheap tickets. Travelers can spend a significant amount of time scouring the web for the best deal. Not all countries have a low cost carrier and not all airports are serviced by a discount airline. Many low-fare companies cannot be booked through on-line agencies or consolidators, such as Expedia, Orbitz and Lastminute. Promotional offers are usually limited and expire on a daily if not hourly basis. And when you finally find a flight, it is difficult to compare the offering.

The following tips will reduce your search time and prepare you for any additional travel time.

Research

• Determine which carriers service the route you wish to fly. Many airport web sites include a route map as well as a list of carriers. Alternatives will only become apparent if you check the web site of both airports, arrival and departure.

• If you are traveling abroad or within a foreign country or continent, identify local on-line agencies and consolidators of discount airfares.

• Low cost carriers often use secondary airports. Verify distance and ground transportation before you book. Most low-fare carriers and many consolidators provide such information on their web sites.

• Many low-fare carriers offer point-to-point service. It may not be possible to check-in for a second flight at a transit desk. Thus you may need to build-in time between flights to accommodate any passport formalities, claim your luggage and check-in for the second leg of your journey.

• Security precautions introduced by major credit card companies may limit your ability to book flights on foreign web sites.

Getting the best deal

• Initiate your search with on-line agencies and consolidators.

• Subscribe to the airline and to the consolidator’s newsletter.

• Utilize services that enable you to set a price, such as the Orbitz “Deal Detector”. Orbitz will send an email if fares on the route you select drop to the price level you set. The service is available for free.

• Use the consolidator as a tool. Book directly with airline. This may reduce the service charge without affecting the fare.

Comparing fares

• Low cost fares are often quoted on a one-way basis.

• Taxes, handling fees and other surcharges are not always included in the initial price. Click through to the final page to effectively compare cost.

• Airfare may be quoted in the airline or consolidator’s local currency only. Converting fares to a single currency will facilitate comparison.

Before you depart

• Pack a lunch or a snack and drinks for all. Food and drinks are no longer included in the price of the ticket!

• Arrive at the airport early if you want to sit next to your companion and the kids. Seating is likely to be open and boarding is oftentimes based on the order in which passengers’ check-in.

Copyright © more2explore S.r.l. All rights reserved.

Roger Munns asked:

The news that the Malta tourist industry has been waiting for so long for has finally been confirmed – low cost flights to the island have been granted approval.

Visitor numbers to the Mediterranean holiday island have been in decline this year, and culmilated in rumours that a UK tour operator was considering pulling Malta out of its brochures for next year, which would sharply accelerate the decline from a destination competing with Spain and her islands for tourists to a much smaller niche market player.

Hotel and resort owners have seen the Maltese government drag the negotiations out with the low cost airlines for some time, with delays in agreements losing Malta the potential of having extra tourists for this summer season.

‘It’s been painful to watch’, commented one local travel guide on the flight news, ‘The impression the government have given is that they were quite happy to protect part of Malta’s industry – the flag carrier Air Malta – at the expense of the overall travel trade. As a result the number of visitors this year has already shown a drop. If they had acted quicker this last summer season could have been much better for the Malta hotels and holiday industry’.

Statements from Ryanair, the first low cost carrier to be flying to Malta, seem to back up the claims by the guide as they say they were at one stage taking a booking a minute for their new Malta route.

‘If the Malta government had got the agreement in place six months ago, the tourist industry would be in a much better position today, after a good summer’, they add.

Some of the anticipation of an increase in hotel and holiday bookings for Malta has been tempered recently after a survey in the UK – Malta’s largest market – showed that package holidays in 2007 would be more expensive than comparable holidays in Spain and her islands.

Malta Property

‘There is a possibility’, comment the guide, ‘That the introduction of the low cost airlines flying to Malta will merely delay the long term decline of the island’s tourist industry. Unless money is spent on the infrastructure and improving the environment for the tourists generally there is a danger that a lot of visitors will be one-off. If there’s a lesson to be learned in Malta that the government and her agencies have failed to grasp it is that sustainable tourism is built on repeat visitors. At the moment a lot of visitors from the UK see Malta as a one-off trip’.

As well as Ryanair, easyjet are also in talks about flights to Malta, with the possibility of operations beginning in spring next year.

The property market will also be keeping a close eye on tourist numbers now that the new flights have been given the green light. If visitor numbers do drop in the medium term it could be good news for locals looking to buy their first property.

There has been some discontent on the island about the rising prices of property in Malta, and with less overseas buyers the possibility of prices falling and more islanders being able to get on the property ladder could be welcome news, as today’s tourist is often tomorrow’s property buyer.

But now that low cost airlines are going to start offering flights to Malta, this could help the Malta hotels and holiday market as more people consider three and four day breaks instead of the traditional week or fortnight, boosting the overall number of visitors, especially if Air Malta and the low cost airlines bring the cost of Malta flights to levels seen for the Spanish islands.

Malta has traditionally seen the majority of her visitors from the UK, but this could be changing to a more diverse mix in future years.

Last year saw a record number of visitors from Italy, and increased enquiries have been received at estate agents across the island from Scandanvia, Holland, France and Belgium, helping to increase the demand for Malta properties.

Wolfgang Jaegel asked:

Budget Airlines, also known as low cost airlines, discount carries, or no frill airlines, have revolutionized the way the people travel. With the introduction of the budget airlines, even a common man can now dream of air travels, which was once just confined to upper class people as well as business executives.

A budget airline is simply a category of airlines that render low fare services via cutting off majority of traditional passenger services. In other words, budget airlines are flight carriers that provide services at exceptionally low rates. Sometimes, budget airlines could even fetch you more than 50% discount.

The concept of budget airlines was first introduced in the United States. During the 1990s, it spread to Europe, and later gradually to Asian destinations. Now this concept has become popular across the world.

Today, many of the reputable airlines in the scenario provide low cost airline services and that too without sacrificing the quality of services. Budget airlines generally make available low fare services through adopting certain practices, such as, providing food options to be paid separately rather than providing it as an all inclusive service and by providing seating on the basis of ‘first come, first fill,’ ie, in the case of budget airlines, the plane is boarded just as a bus and as such, seats would be occupied by those who would come first. In fact, budget airlines have now become one of the smartest ways to travel.

Some of the salient features of budget airlines are single traveler class, single category of airplane that reduces training as well as servicing expenses, easy fare scheme, unreserved seating systems, early flights in order to eliminate delays in air traffic, short flights, ticket sales via the internet, thereby enabling passengers to save money in the form of commissions and fees paid to travel agents, issuance of tickets in electronic format, absence of services such as in flight catering services as well as other complimentary services.

In the case of budget airlines, the pricing of air fares is based on the duration of time between booking and departure. The earlier you make bookings for airfare, much cheaper would be the airfare. Similarly, in order to fill the unsold seat in the plane, some airlines would slash the price prior to a few days before its departure.

A specialty of most of the budget airlines is that they cater to almost all types of travelers. For instance, some airlines operate budget flights according to the convenience of the business travelers. There are certain airlines providing incredible deals on air fares for students as well as leisurely travelers. In most cases, budget airline fares are flexible, al though, in some instances, these airlines may charge a nominal fee to make changes in flight reservations.

A budget airline provides almost the same superb services that a standard airline offers, such as excellent dining options, superb entertainment facilities, and comfortable as well as soft cabins. Additionally, some of the budget airlines render special services for passengers such as elderly travelers, children traveling alone or not accompanied by their parents, pregnant as well as passengers flying with infants, and passengers who have visual, speech, or hearing imparity.

With the introduction of the internet, it has become quite easy to find a budget airline. Many of the airlines have their own websites with facilities for online ticket booking. This in turn is very convenient. It is not only beneficial for hassle-free bookings but also enable you to know whether they provide any kind of discount or deals for traveling within a stipulated period or during a particular season such as Christmas or New Year. All you have to do is to just log into their website and inform them regarding the destination you are going to travel and date of departure.

All of the rest they will take care. In addition, airfare bookings online is economical, as it enables you to save pennies on issuing tickets. The airlines, in most cases, sent confirmation through a simple document containing flight details as well as booking reference. When you make payments and bookings online, it allows you to easily take a print out of this document as soon as the booking process is completed. In short, with just a click of a mouse you can make bookings for a comfortable air journey.

Roger Munns asked:

Malta has experienced an uncommon boon this year in their tourist trade. It appears that their popularity is on the rise as a popular, affordable destination for more travelers on holiday. And much of this success can be attributed to the increase in affordable flights to and from the exotic destination.

Airlines, especially low-cost airlines, are accustomed to record sales during the peak travel months of summer, but not so much in the winter months. Malta’s home based airlines are reporting a record breaking winter season this year with more than 500,000 passengers originating from their home base of Malta’s Luqa Airport. The winter months, November 2007 through March 2008, showed a remarkable 15 percent increase over the 2006 winter season.

Malta’s charter air traffic is on the increase as well and is reporting a 21 percent increase over last year’s figures. And it’s not just the Maltese who are prospering: the market reported the largest increase as being Italy with 41 percent. Germany came in a close second at 32 percent with France at 25 percent and the U.K. by 6 percent.

Airline executives are reporting double-digit growth every month during the winter season. The question arises as to why this has happened. This success can be attributed to several factors:

* Existing code-share agreements between a network of airlines a network allow travelers daily access via European hubs. In its entirety, the network of airlines offers access to more than 180 destinations worldwide.

* Airline ticket sales via the Internet are credited as well with sales increases during the winter months.

* Many of these have added additional destinations to their list of available destinations.

* In addition to the introduction of new available destinations, airlines are increasing capacity and the frequency of flights to other major European hubs.

Times are difficult around the globe these days; both financially and politically. Now more than ever people want a break from it all in a place they can afford to visit while feeling secure in their person visiting. Many Europeans are choosing to look closer to home for their travel destinations for both of these reasons. Malta and many other near island resort sports are becoming more popular than ever.

The success of low-cost airlines proves that current currency exchange rates have not had the negative impact on international travel that was anticipated. Passengers are simply being more mindful of prices that fit their travel plans and budgets. In fact, business for most of the low-cost airlines that make frequent flights to and from Malta as well as the Balearic and Canary Islands, has seen a dramatic increase. This increase is expected to rise even more; at least for the short while.

Airlines have already promised more frequent flights to and from favorite travel destinations for the 2008 summer travel season. Increased flights at reduced prices and the availability of packaged travel deals are sure to be big hits with tourists this year. It would appear that major global excursions are out and neatly-packaged, convenient and affordable holiday hotspots are the flavor of 2008.

Roger Munns asked:

European winter holidays have grown in popularity in recent years, and ski slopes are one of the major destinations for individuals on holiday during the cold months. Often the only thing stopping an individual or family from going on vacation is the price tag, as some individuals and families don’t have the financial resources to fund a holiday trip to go skiing. However several low cost airlines are making a holiday to the ski slopes affordable for all individuals and families.

Several airlines recently announced a plan to encourage more trips to ski resorts by opening up additional routes for travel. These fly passengers directly to the airports that are closest to several of the major skiing destinations for many individuals and families on holiday. For example, easyJet flies passengers on holiday into Barcelona, which is the nearest airport to the Andorra skiing resort.

In addition to the flight taking passengers to ski at Andorra, there are several more flights connecting travelers to their favorite ski destinations. Flights from London, Glasgow, Bristol, Liverpool, Blackpool and Newscastle in the important UK travel market all connect individuals to their favorite skiing destinations. In fact, Ryanair announced in October last year that they would increase the number of airplane ski routes to 58, which is the largest number of direct routes from the UK to European ski destinations for one company.

Of course several other airline companies have followed suit and are also offering individuals and families on holiday to ski resorts with low costs and direct flights. These include Snowjet, Flybe, Thomsonfly and easyJet.

The reason airlines have chosen to increase the number of direct routes they provide to ski resorts for the 2008 winter holiday period is due to the fact business is booming. As of the end of October, easyJet alone has had over 2.5 million advanced bookings for individuals and families wanting their flying services to travel to skiing destinations in Europe during the winter. Increasing the number of direct routes of these low costs airlines allows even more individuals to book flights for their holiday plans.

Due to the fact that more direct routes have been developed, individuals can expect to pay less for their flight than in previous years. More routes have made it possible for individuals to connect to their favourite skiing place straight from their local airport. This means individuals don’t have to fly out of their way and experience a layover before they even board the actual plane that will take them where they want to go. This will be a major benefit to many individuals as it will save time flying and instead allow them with more time to spend on the slopes actually skiing.

If you are planning to go European skiing for next winter, consider using one of the low cost airlines offering direct ski routes. Not only do they offer you direct routes that fly you into the airport nearest the ski resort you are staying at, but they also make taking a holiday affordable for all individuals and families in the UK.

Michael Lee asked:

Malaga airport is currently the fourth busiest in Spain and last year over 13 million travelers passed through their doors. Today an astounding 23 UK airports provide flights to Malaga. Gone are the days of having to travel miles before even leaving the shores of the UK we can now travel from a huge variety of regional airports which makes travel to Spain easier than ever.

Summer 2008 saw great success at Malaga airport travelers got to their destination in good time after collecting their luggage. A series of new construction works took place in 2008 delays to and from the airport were expected but kept to a minimum. In July 2007 works to extend the already existing facilities were completed; new car parks, extra check-in desks, and further luggage carousels were added. Eventually the new runway at terminal 1 will open allowing a greater rate of passengers to pass through the airport. Malaga functions very well as an international airport with all of the modern facilities you would imagine in such a development.

The introduction of budget flights to Malaga has made the airport very accessible to tourists from the UK. BMIbaby, Thompson Fly, Easy Jet, and Ryan Air are the biggest operators flying to Malaga, perhaps the best way to ensure you receive the cheapest prices is to use a search engine that will compare the prices for you. This means that you will not have to trawl through the various operators manually and have to re-insert your details over and over again.

These airlines have greatly reduced the cost of air travel however there are a few things you can do personally to ensure you get the best prices. By booking your air travel as far in advance of your holiday usually means cheaper prices. This is because as time passes and the date of your travel nears demand for the few remaining seats increases the prices. Certain airlines also host sale weekends or promotional type offers. For instance they drop the airport taxes for a limited period or reduced the seat costs. By signing up to airline newsletters you often hear about these promotions before they happen. Be wary as some of these airlines have some hidden extras. You might have to pay to take luggage in the hold or pay for online check in. compare prices closely and you are sure to get the best prices.

Remember that often with these no frill airlines you wont be given food during the trip, make sure you know what to expect before flying. Advanced or express check in is a relatively new feature offered in air travel it quite often means that you no longer have to arrive so early for your flight; which means you will spend less time travelling and more time enjoying your holiday.

Hiring a car at Malaga airport is simple and hassle free there are literally hundreds of options including large international companies and some local Spanish operators. The Car hire companies are generally located on the lower level of the airport. Having collected your luggage do not go through to the arrivals area, follow the signs for car hire and go down a level to where you will find the offices of the rental companies. With so many companies operating from Malaga its a good idea to use a comparison search engine again which will bring you a list of the best offers available.

Below is a guide to the various companies flying to Malaga and from which airports they operate out of.

Air-Scotland

Edinburgh and Glasgow

Jet2

Leeds Bradford, Newcastle, Blackpool, Manchester

British Airways

Iberia - Heathrow and Gatwick, GB Airways Manchester

BMI baby

Birmingham, Cardiff, East Midlands, Manchester and Teeside

Fly Globe Span

Glasgow and Edinburgh

Thomson fly

Belfast, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Coventry, Doncaster Sheffield, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Glasgow, Humberside, Leeds Bradford, Liverpool, Luton, Manchester, Newcastle, Norwich and Teeside

Fly Thomascook (summer only)

Birmingham, London Gatwick, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle

Easy Jet

Belfast, Bristol, East Midlands, Liverpool, Gatwick, Luton, Newcastle and Stansted

Fly Be

Exeter and Southampton

Fly Monarch

Birmingham, Gatwick, Luton and Manchester

Iberia

London and Manchester

Korbin Newlyn asked:

Many of us have to face facts, air travel is a mess. The airline industry as a whole is going through a large amount of upheaval with numerous airlines going bankrupt as well as other merging in an attempt to just survive. From an economic perspective when there are less and less airlines to select from then you begin to see the costs of the airfare start to climb higher and higher.

The continued rise in cost of fuel is having a great impact on the cost of airfare in addition many airlines have no choice but to increase other fees as well simply to be able to afford to operate their flights on a daily basis. The majority of airlines are slowly doing away with extras such as in-flight meals to lessen their operating costs while other airlines are even to the point as to revamp their planes so that they will be lighter as well as taking up far less fuel.

Still Options Available

Do yourself a favor and don’t even bother looking into the baggage requirements because they have changed and the old days when the airlines would let slide people with baggage that would be slightly over the limit on flights are over as well. Yet even with all of that you still have the opportunity to locate low cost flights and at times and destinations you never really considered.

In some instances you can locate low cost flights simply by making a phone call to the airlines at a minimum of 30 days in advance of your actual flight departure but even that is beginning to wear off. So what’s the best way to find low cost flights?

The internet, without question, is a literal gold mind of airline deals and you can discover numerous low cost flights simply by investigating the internet. Yet when you purchase low cost flights over the internet you need to be careful that you are not getting scammed.

It is important that you always confirm any of the low cost flights that you purchase form the internet with the actual airline. It is far to simple a task for a shady internet vendor to sell you a bogus airline ticket and then make a claim it is the fault of the airline. There are numerous legitimate low cost flights available to the public on the internet yet you should always be careful.

Keep Your Local Travel Agent In Mind

There are travel agents that will see to it that they purchase blocks of airline tickets in advance and then sell them to their clients. This is an additional method of getting excellent low cost flights. It is a wise idea to check with a travel agent since they might have the exact holiday package that you are searching for with low cost flights rolled into them. They might also have just flights for sale that you would be able to benefit from as well.

Nowadays, with the consolidating airlines and the high price of fuel it is difficult to still locate low cost flights when you want them the most. Yet if you take the time and effort to search for them you can still find a deal. Just make certain to check all the necessary points out prior to you committing since you never know for sure when someone might want to take you for a ride.

Leonardo Endo asked:

One of the most influential factors for vacation goers whether they would pursue their plan of going on a tour or actually postponing it for the next summer season, is the very high cost of traveling outside the country, particularly when dealing with international airfares.

While some seasoned travelers seem to not have any problem going in and out of the country, most people actually take months or even years just to plan a family tour that is bound to a foreign land. Believe it or not, if you are someone who is so used to traveling internationally already, I must tell you that there are just people who would take them almost a lifetime before actually experiencing that unexplainable feeling of going on a vacation tour to some foreign land. The sad fact is that, not too many can afford to travel outside their countries.

However, times have changed. Looking for cheap international airfares during the old days was like searching for a suitable partner to marry, you never know when will you be able to find your perfect match. However, the internet is so vast and there certainly are numerous websites whose business is into traveling.

Before you approach any of these existing travel websites, the first thing that you must keep in mind is to check the authenticity of the site you are visiting. Before you attempt to contact anyone through a particular website, or before you even give any personal information, you have to make sure that you are dealing with a legitimate travel website.

Once you have verified that you have found a trusted and legitimate travel site, the first thing you must do is to toggle around their pages and research thoroughly on the information they have available in terms of flight rates. Try to familiarize yourself well with the website you’re visiting so you can get as much information as you need.

A good tip you need to know is that when doing your research on various flight rates, most usually you will find the lowest available flights within package deals.
